This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students I work with arrive every day smiling, full of energy, inquisitive, and eager to learn. We are 90 percent second language learners and many of our students arrived in the United States recently or their parents immigrated here. Over 90 percent of the students at our school qualify for free and reduced price lunch and many live in transitional housing.

Regardless of circumstance, my students are vibrant, hard working and joyous learners.

We are an Inclusive Co-teaching classroom with a wide range of skills and strengths. We strive to create a space where students can explore each subject in a way that builds on their strengths and learning styles.

My Project

These books will be used by my students in book clubs where they engage in literary debates, use text evidence to back up their thoughts, are given choice over their topics of study, and most importantly learn to love reading. We are really excited to connect our book clubs to our social justice and immigration study but we need more books to accomplish this task.

My students love book clubs so much that when I told them we were putting them on pause for a few weeks before the state test many of my students chose to organize their own clubs and stayed in for recess so they could discuss their books together.

Unfortunately we do not have enough sets of books at my school to engage in this meaningful work. The book sets I chose are at a variety of reading levels so that all the readers in my classroom have access to this unit. They are all realistic or historical fiction and will help my students understand and empathize with a range of experiences people have had when they immigrate. It will help them in their reading and writing for social studies. Please help us to accomplish this task! We are so excited for our new books!
