My students need books that foster their developing literacy skills, and increase the variety of diverse, engaging titles available in the library collection.
The students at this school, a Title I school in an urban area, come from a variety of backgrounds. We are a magnet elementary school with a new theme of play and ingenuity, and with that comes an increase in the number of ways in which students are able to explore, create and take risks in their learning.
The mission of the library is to support the academic growth of all students, develop & nurture an interest in books, and foster a life-long love of reading for enjoyment; and the vision is to create an environment where academics, play, creativity & ingenuity merge.
The collection is in need of titles which support the mission and vision of the library.
My Project
The titles in this project will go a long way towards increasing the diversity of the library's collection in several different areas. The biographies, such as Malcolm Little and Sonia Sotomayer will provide increased variety in the biography section, and the fiction titles such as Pashmina and When We Are Alone will allow for diversity to increase in the fiction section.
The picture books included in this project vary in topics and reading level, but all feature illustrations and characters who are representative of the diverse population which utilizes the library collection.
Let the Children March and Mae Among the Stars are just a few of the beautiful, engaging and high-quality stories that will be added to the collection thanks to this project.
