Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my second year of teaching after having less than 3 dozen books in my classroom library, I received generous donations from friends and family to build one. Now, in my fifth year of teaching 4th grade, there is quite a collection. Though a 4th grade library can never be too large, with 35 students, it can be too uncomfortable and uninviting.
Rather than sitting on the hard floor or being squished into a limited space that is the library, students should be able to spread out throughout the room comfortably. With that in mind, I am seeking support for a few items for our sea-themed library.
Most of my students have very few – if any – of their own books at home. Those who do, however, have no space to simply sit and read. They are crammed into tiny apartments, sometimes 10 people to 2 bedrooms (as was the case with a student last year). Students in my district live in a city that is on pace to not only surpass its homicide record by the end of the year, but that of most major cities. They would love a safe, inviting library where they can dive into Narnia, or Hogwarts, go on journeys with Peter Hatcher or Charlie Bucket, and discover authors such as Judy Blume and Paula Danziger.
A safe, comfortable, fun environment would definitely improve their reading skills, grow their love for reading, and make going to the library even more special. I know they would appreciate and benefit from a few beanbags, beanbag chairs, and body pillows – materials that would allow them to sit and read with their friends in the library or anywhere around our bungalow classroom.
