Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are tough. Unfortunately they have to be tough 100% of the time. They're lives are difficult, they rarely receive support outside of school and are in a constant state of stress.
As a trauma informed teacher, I understand the importance of students freeing their minds and having a break and motivation.
My kiddos are constantly using excess energy combating their stresses and trauma all throughout the school day. It is a basic recommendation to have a moment of joy. "Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world." —Nelson Mandela
My students come from many different backgrounds.
I teach 5th grade ESL, General education, inclusion class with students with autism and students with IEP. My students are Title I students. They are great students and love learning, especially when it's non-traditional learning. They come from a community filled with poverty, homelessness, and crime, but they are filled with hope. These children attend a public school in an industrial and commercial community of New York City.
I am hoping this project will help my students to continue to celebrate the diversity within themselves and to feel empowered to succeed even when experiencing tumultuous times.
My Project
My students are adjusting to distance learning as best as they can. All families are in very different situations. After contacting all families, we have come to an understanding that they do whatever they can with whatever is available. I love seeing my students during our virtual lessons, but there's always a few missing due to the current situation. Many have had trouble getting internet signal and have had to miss lessons, activities, or work online. Distance learning was something most were not prepared for. Students without the proper technology or internet access have a very difficult time keeping up with distance learning. This student is unable to join our daily Zoom meetings and cannot access the work, resources, or activities posted on various platforms because her device does not grant her access. This child is such a hard-worker and has persevered through many challenges. The iPad will give this student access to activities and games and will serve as a great source of information and a vital tool for learning. It will also grant student access to apps that only work on iPads. This technology will continue to support this child's education for years to come!
