Help me give my students a safe and fun environment where they can learn, stay healthy, and know how to protect themselves from germs and COVID. Help me keep their school items sanitized and safe to use.
My students were affected by Hurricane Harvey and then by two floods last year. Most of their homes, as well as areas of our school, still get flooded with heavy rain. Most of them qualify for free or reduced lunch. They are smart and very eager to learn, but they lack resources. There’s no time for homework because they have to help their parents at work or to care for the house. The only opportunity they have to express their knowledge is during the school day. They don’t have money for extras. Every dollar they have goes towards paying the light and putting food on the table. We teachers are the ones who buy the school supplies, the snacks, and the colorful book boxes, and things to make the class fun because they simply can’t afford them.
My Project
Now that students are returning to in-person learning, we need to laminate learning centers and other resources for easy disinfecting. We also have to provide students with individual tools and supplies such as pencil boxes, pencil sharpeners, counters, dice, book boxes, etc. so that they can social distance while still in the classroom. Sitting in a corner and picking several books to read is no longer allowed. The students have to choose a few books and then keep it in their individual boxes for over a week. After that, it has to sit out for 4 days to disinfect before it can go back into the shelves. Notebooks and all supplies will have to be kept separate in the individual student's book bin so as not to spread germs. There is no sharing. These items will help us keep the classroom fun while keeping kids safe.
