My entire school is currently sharing 45 extremely dysfunctional laptops. My students need access to working computers during class without their teacher (me) having to fight for them!
I teach English and AVID (a college-prep course) to 11th graders at an urban public charter school in Maryland.
They are extremely digitally-oriented, and my best lessons have often been the ones that incorporate technology. Unfortunately, access to technology is rather limited. On any given day, 3 different teachers (or more) are requesting access to our laptop cart for instruction. Even if I do get the laptop cart, the laptops are extremely slow and prone to breaking down. It generally takes 15 minutes to get a computer booted up and ready to go.
My students need 4 laptops, 4 laptop cases, and a lockable storage drawer for writing essays, doing Internet research, and creating presentations. Since I can rarely guarantee that I will have access to working computers, it is difficult to plan to use technology in my lessons. However, when I do use technology, my students thrive. They are more engaged and actually more comfortable with the tasks set to them. With these four laptops, I'll always have enough laptops for my students to work in groups on presentations and Internet research. The large number of students I teach who do not have computer access at home will also be able to work on essays and presentations after school.
Attempting to work with slow, dysfunctional, sub-standard equipment is very disheartening.
New equipment that is just for us will invigorate these kids. Let my students know they deserve the best!
