We used the highlighters, sticky tabs, guided reading strips, index cards, markers, and colored pencils to annotate texts, identify important information, organize our thinking, and practice different active reading strategies. The chart paper also became an important part of our lessons as I modeled strategies using the \"I Do, We Do, You Do\" approach before students practiced applying those skills more independently.\r\n\r\nThese resources were especially helpful during guided and independent reading because they gave students concrete tools for breaking down texts that may have initially felt difficult or overwhelming. Instead of simply reading through a passage, students could use reading strips to focus on smaller sections, highlight key information, mark places where they had questions or made connections, and organize their ideas before responding. As we continued using these strategies, the goal was for students to rely less on teacher support and become increasingly confident in their ability to read critically, make meaning from a text, and demonstrate their understanding independently.\r\n\r\nOn behalf of my students, I sincerely thank you for your generosity. Just Mercy and I Am Alfonso Jones allowed us to explore important themes such as justice, identity, race, and inequality while also strengthening students' skills in literary analysis. Students were able to make connections across texts, analyze themes and characters, support their ideas with textual evidence, and consider how an author's perspective can shape the way a story is told.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is about much more than simply finishing a book. We work to build a culture where students can read independently, discuss what they are reading with their classmates, and connect literature to both their own lives and the world around them. These books gave my students something new to be excited about and helped make our classroom library a place where they could find stories that felt relevant to them. Having access to these texts also gave students more opportunities to choose books, engage in meaningful conversations, and continue developing confidence as readers and writers.\r\n\r\nThe amount of generosity you've shown to my class is greatly appreciated.
