My hardworking student journalists are curious, engaged, and ambitious. They are some of the most hardworking students I've ever taught in my career.
They love learning, as well as the thrill of exploring what they're most passionate about.
They are also inspired by the journalistic world, and its rapidly evolving nature, as well as potentially seeking a career in a journalistic field. They give up lunches, after-school time, and other "fun" to produce an online media site and a print newspaper for our student body.
My Project
Every year, the National High School Journalism Convention is one of my students' favorite memories of the year: not only do they learn so much in such a short amount of time, but they also have the most fun. The Managing Editor said last year after attending, "Our newspaper has so much undiscovered potential: better stories are to be told, of better substance, in better ways, using better formats, to better audiences. It begins with us."
Every aspect of our newspaper program is better because of the experiences my students have at this convention.
Memorable and exciting, students still haven't stopped talking about the conference from last year!
There's no way for me to provide all of the knowledge students learn at this conference, so the conference allows students to personalize their learning in topics they're most interested in and cram a ton of knowledge in just a few short days. Not to mention how much their learning has translated into tangible evidence this year!
