Help me give my students an amazing hands-on learning experience with a field trip to the visiting Mo Willems exhibit at the Kansas Children's Discovery Center.
I am a library media specialist in an elementary school of about 520 students. Our school is located in an historic neighborhood where many families have lived for generations. Many of our students' parents and grandparents went to our school themselves. At the same time, we also have a number of transient students who lack stability in their lives. We are a high poverty community, and 100% of our students recieve free lunch and free breakfast each day.
Most of our students have limited opportunities to experience learning in venues outside the classroom.
These children are enthusiastic learners who crave rich hands-on educational experiences, but they have financial barriers that keep such experiences out of their reach.
My Project
Kindergarten students will be given the opportunity to encounter the visiting Mo Willems exhibit at the Children's Discovery Center. They will visit the world of Mo Willems and his most cherished characters including Elaphant and PIggie, Knuffle Bunny, and The Pigeon. Themes like "what makes a good friend" and "how to make yourself understood" are addressed as the children make their own art and explore the various hands-on elements of the exhibit.
This traveling exhibit will enhance my students' love of literature by giving them an authentic connection to an author we study each year and to some of their favorite book characters.
All students deserve the opportunity to experience hands-on learning outside the school environment. Mo Willems is one of the most popular authors for young children, and my students are some of his biggest fans. By exposing these kindergarteners to this limited-time opportunity, they will walk away with an even deeper love for the books they read at school and with memories that will last for years to come.
