Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are curious. If you were to walk into my classroom, you would hear "What's that?" "How does it work?" "What does it do?" My students are enthusiastic. In my classroom you will hear "Let me see!" "Let me try!" "Can I help?" My students are imaginative. They like to imagine what they will be when they "grow up." One day they want to be future doctors, veterinarians, and astronauts; the next day they want to save the world by being fire-firefighters and police officers.
My students probably sound like most other kindergarteners you've met, but almost all of my students come from low-income households.
On Mondays, many students eat a double serving of breakfast, provided by Dallas ISD. Some students wear uniforms that are either too big or too small. And sometimes their parents are not able to provide all of the required school supplies.
My Project
Magnetism is a concept that all kindergarteners should understand, as stated by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). I'm requesting a few different kinds of magnets, so that my students can experiment with a variety of materials.
Kindergarten students learn best through hands-on experiences and discovery, so I want my students to be able to explore magnetism with their own hands, rather than merely watch me demonstrate the concept.
With the materials I'm requesting, students will have the opportunity to test magnets in all different shapes, sizes, and strengths. I know that the range of magnetic materials will enrich my students' experiences through discussion about why certain magnets are stronger than others.
