My Students

Was the theory of evolution easy for you to swallow? Or was it another profound idea that didn't quite sit well in your notion of how things work in the universe before you walked into a science class? If given the evidence, would students develop the same theory on their own?

My students are young and inquiring minds that love the challenge of science.

They aren't the type to blindly accept facts spewed at them. They aren't the type that merely want to know. They are the type of students that want to understand. And the field of biology has definitely challenged their understanding. Their minds have trekked from the overarching umbrella of an ecosystem down to the microscopic playground of cells that produce life. Yet, it hasn't been easy as the ideas and theories of biology aren't exactly foolproof and airtight. Young minds want to be satisfied and it's been a challenge all year to provide them with the evidence and tangible connections needed to grasp the science of biology.

My Project

The supplies are geared for a comprehensive unit of evolution. The classroom is never intended to be a podium for one to dictate beliefs to students. The classroom is the place for evidence, ideas, and discussions to mesh and bloom into the current theories and notions of society. The students will use the cranium models to delve into the questions of human origins and try to understand the evidence scientists use to prove our ancestral connections to earlier species. The dissection kits and shark specimens will give the students the opportunity to explore the characteristics of a different type of species, but in doing so realize the subtle connections in anatomy and physiology that humans share with sharks. Did all species on earth really evolve from the same primordial soup of biochemistry? What will the observations and evidence prove or disprove? The expectations are that students will explore this unit of evolution as scientists and develop their own theory of life's origins.

This project will make great strides in helping my students understand another difficult theory of science.

It gives them insight into scientific inquiry and how theories are developed. They should walk out of this class at the end of the year feeling like scientists, having developed their own theories and ideas from what they've learned and experienced in class.
