Discovering a Love for Reading!

Help me give my students leveled books they will enjoy, thay will grow their love of reading and fill in the instructional gaps that Covid has caused.

My Students

These sweet kiddos have never known a "normal" year of education, yet they persevere with smiles on their faces. They have a passion for learning but because of the circumstances, have gaps in the foundational skills that I'm trying to fill in without all the resources needed to do so. During a nonfiction unit of study, one of my students asked for more books about space on her reading level and I was unable to even borrow any. I used technology to get her more information, but it isn't the same as having those books in hand and in a personal browsing book box. The way a child's face lights up when they get to borrow a new book, on a topic they are interested in, that they can also read independently, is like no other!

My Project

My students are passionate about learning and have a true love of books that is echoed by their teacher. Because of the unfortunate circumstances of Covid, there are foundational gaps I'm trying to fill in without all the resources needed to do so in the new classroom I'm in this year. I know in the world we live in, using technology is always an option, but this is the age where hands on text is so important! I teach first and second graders, age 5-8. The way a child's face lights up when they get to borrow a new book, on a topic they are interested in, that they can also read independently, is priceless! I recently moved from a different district that had more than enough books, to a classroom that needs more leveled texts to support reading instruction. I'm currently begging for and borrowing books to get by for now. Any help towards my goal is greatly appreciated!
