This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My school is located in Ferguson, Missouri. We are a 100% free lunch school due to the low economic status of the residents of our community.

We are starting a new after-school program in order to connect our students with the sport of disc golf.

Our students are in need of activities such as these, which support a healthy, active lifestyle. Joining recreational sports teams are costly and can cause a financial burden to families in our neighborhood. My students have expressed a strong desire for an opportunity to be a part of a club or sport.

My Project

Research shows that after-school programs increase student attendance, decrease behavior problems, and have a positive impact on student grades. It is my goal to provide our students with an after-school program that they will enjoy and take pride in being a part of. Disc golf is a rapid growing sport and supports participants of all ages and ability levels.

Having disc golf targets (baskets) will provide us with opportunities to get our students involved in a sport that will support an active, healthy lifestyle.

Disc golf will increase students' self-confidence while teaching them sportsmanship, responsibility, perseverance, and increase their school engagement.

Students will be able to participate in our after-school disc golf club and having the appropriate equipment will help make their experience a great one.
