This past Spring we learned how to play checkers! Games are ESSENTIAL for leaders because they learn how to interact with their peers in positive ways in small groups or one-on-one. All the skills they learn they can take with them into their classrooms, their schools, and their communities.\r\n\r\nI was really proud of our club's persistence with checkers because of all the skills it takes to play - and it's a great place to start before learning how to play chess! You have to follow the rules correctly, stay focused during play, communicate clearly when unsure of the rules or fair play, and stay calm and positive when you lose the game (or stay humble and kind when you win!). They did amazing!\r\n\r\nOur club was big enough that we needed many checker boards so that everyone could play at the same time. Your support was a literal game changer! The other games you contributed also gave us good times and fun memories. With the art resources you provided, this project allows these students to spend time each day thinking about not only how to express themselves, but also challenging them to think of themselves in a positive light. Many black and brown children feel as if they are not good enough, not smart enough, not important enough to make a difference or for others to truly care about them. This project give them a chance to celebrate what is unique about them and to focus on and remember what they actually like and appreciate about themselves. A project like \"Celebrate You\" is just one way our school works to create the inner resiliency students need to be leaders in their classroom, school, and communities. \r\n\r\nOur next steps will be to finish the project in time to put it up for display at our Black History Month event later this month.
