Disability Awareness for Ninth Graders: Fantastic Fiction 4

My students need 25 copies of Terry Trueman's "Cruise Control".

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am asking for 25 copies of Terry Trueman’s “Cruise Control,” a fantastic teenage novel about a young man with cerebral palsy, and his family. I am requesting a three class sets of fifty, so this proposal is divided into six parts to make it easier to fund (and this is Part 4). I would like to teach about disabilities using easy, accessible, realistic teen fiction. There are many novels that would be appropriate, but Mr. Trueman’s works are uniquely interesting and accessible for 9th graders. “Cruise Control” is a fascinating novel about a young man with cerebral palsy, whose inability to communicate or move well in the world belies his rich interior life. It is an interesting and realistic portrayal of the mind of a teenager who cannot walk, talk, or control most of his body. This short, easy-to-read, age-appropriate book will give students a controlled platform for discussing controversial issues, while supporting literacy. It is taught early in the school year, and helps students build confidence for tackling more challenging works, later on. My high-school students are highly motivated kids living in a Los Angeles barrio. Every child at our school now qualifies to receive free meals, and the whole campus receives Title One funding (meaning, the community as a whole is really broke). The parents of our students absolutely cannot and will not provide any classroom “extras,” and sometimes not even the “necessities.” Without your help, this project absolutely will not happen. Thank you for helping these wonderful young people achieve their academic, intellectual, and social best!
