I am a new school nurse at the high school, and have noticed a need for a clothing/dignity closet for the students at the high school. We have had several instances where a student is in need of a changes of clothes, not for dress code violations, but for medical reasons such as menses times, bloody noses, vomiting or incontinence issues. In these instances students need to wait for parents to bring them a change of clothes and have waited upwards of almost 2 hours in some cases for this to happen. This is taking time away from important educational time.
I want to propose the creation of a clothing and dignity closet for the school.
The clothing would be unisex and purchased in bulk to be the most cost effective. We would not expect to receive the clothing back from students, to help decrease the transmission of any germs or illnesses. The items in the clothing closet will be given out at staff discretion and given out for medical reasons and NOT dress code violations.
In addition to clothing items a small amount of toiletry items will be kept in the closet to help with students that do not have access to self hygiene items at home.
