My 10th and 12th grade students are highly curious and intellectually driven individuals, representing diverse backgrounds and life experiences. My students consistently demonstrate resilience in the classroom as they navigate ELA as an academic discipline, especially the 30% of the student body who are learning English as a new language. They thrive when given assignments that are student-centered, where they can bring their own unique voice to the content under study, infusing their multicultural, personal experiences into our curriculum.
Our school is a small community school, which means we are committed to educating the whole child.
Our students do not just come to school for classes, but also stay for a community hour and activities in the afternoon. Students frequently give back to the community through biannual community service days and participation in projects with local organizations. Being part of the larger community gives our students purpose within the school.
My Project
These wonderfully versatile video cameras will become an integral part of multiple units throughout the year, making a huge impact on my students' learning. In our unit about gender, students will be able to conduct an interview project to learn about how their peers, family, and community members perceive gender in our everyday lives. When reading Hamlet and Macbeth, students will work together with classmates to create a film reenactment of a scene, culminating in a film festival to celebrate student work. As seniors prepare to graduate and move onto the next chapters in their lives, they can use these video cameras to produce "senior footprint" videos to impart advice to underclassmen.
Projects involving the digital video cameras will set students up for a student-centered, inquiry-driven and culturally responsive learning environment, where students are engaged in constructing their own knowledge.
Video interview projects give students an opportunity to be involved in their community and learn about the issues that are most pressing to their friends and families. Since students will work on video projects in small groups, this type of learning also helps to cultivate a positive classroom community and supports students who may not have outside access to technology (such as video recording on a smartphone). In this blended learning environment, English Language Learners are also supported by having the opportunity to represent their learning visually through the video-making process. Finally, using these video cameras will give students a wider audience for their work. These projects foster the notion that learning is about more than just grades - it is about critical thinking, information sharing, and collaboration with community.
