Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
On any given day, my classroom represents nearly every continent with students working together to learn English. They are excited to learn about each other, about the USA, and most importantly, from each other.
My students come from varied backgrounds and each has a story to share about their often arduous and perilous journey to my school and an education from abroad.
They are overcoming social and emotional barriers each day to receive an education. Learning English in my classroom is often their happiest moment, a chance to remember the home they left and to become a citizen of their new home here in America. My school is situated on the edge of an industrial park in the South Bronx, within the nation’s poorest Congressional District. We are a Title I school, which means that each student qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. I teach 150 students hailing from Yemen, Bangladesh, the Dominican Republic, China, Burkina Faso and so on. They often do not have access to laptops, iPads, or Internet connectivity at home. This makes my classroom their hub to connect, innovate, and impact the world.
My Project
Ultimately the goal is to use digital storytelling and research to empower youth to advocate for positive change by highlighting links between science, advocacy, and lost local history through telling stories. As part of my teaching students who are learning English for the first time, I develop activities that allow them to learn skills to advocate and preserve our collective history for generations to come through the HPSBG Project.
We intend for the HPSBG project to serve as a model for other schools across the nation to digitally capture important stories in their communities.
The laptop, along with the protective case, will allow students to develop 21st-century skills to document the past and future progress of the HPSBG Project. The cables will foster collaboration amongst students and display digital projects for audiences. The microphones will allow to students to clearly communicate the stories that they preserve for the future. They will collaborate to develop short podcasts and videos that highlight the work ranging from local activists to scientists who used Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to pinpoint the cemetery location. Then they will use the laptop to put together this raw material they collect to create professional podcasts, visual stories, and movies to share and document. Additionally, they will utilize the laptop to develop interactive maps of the site’s science and archaeological research, and create ‘science walks’ to document the plant and animal life through photos, audio, and video that leads individuals on immersive digital story-led walks at the historic site of the Project. They will use programs designed for movie production, audio recording, photography, writing, map making, and scientific research. And that's just the start.
We hope to build this digital storytelling model for other school communities to 'Transform Learning About History to Doing Something About History!'
