This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
For the last 6 years, I have taught Civics at a K-8 school with students from low socioeconomic families. There is a lot of love and support but many of our families have limited resources. I spend my own money on incentives and supplies for our students, many of which are struggling readers. In Florida, students must take a standardized Civics exam at the end of the year. It is worth 30% of their overall grade. This is difficult for many students because the Civics Exam requires students to read excerpts from actual historical documents. I would like to help my students by using technology and devices to digest some of the difficult but important excerpts from the Constitution.
Providing the opportunity to integrating iPads as a learning center, immediately increases student engagement and allows for student paced lessons using technology.
After whole class instruction, students then rotate between 2-3 different activities, known as stations. These iPads will be utilized as a station in the classroom and allows students a chance to become familiar with Apple technology, reducing the digital divide.
At these stations, my students will be provided an opportunity to navigate an array of digital learning platforms. Students will access online lesson with fill in the blank, drag and drop, and draw you answer components. Students will review and dissect excerpts and review questions.
If given the chance to incorporate iPads, I will have the resources to successfully lay the foundation of digital learning in my classroom, increase student engagement, and provide the exposure to content to ensure my students are successful on the State Civics Exam.
