This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Picture yourself in a buzzing room full of excitement and problem solving. It is loud. There is laughter. There are failures. There are solutions. You learn by doing, modeling, tweaking...You are in our science lab.

As our school's science lab teacher, I see over 500 students from transitional kindergarten through fifth grade.

They are a diverse group of learners. Our school is situated in middle of San Francisco and serves kids from various surrounding communities. Roughly 38% of my students identify as white, while 40% have Spanish surnames, and 13% receive services in special education. Our school has two pathways, teaching students in both English and Spanish--25% of our students are emerging biliterate, on their path to learning English. Nearly 40% of our population qualifies for free/reduced lunch.

We are a strong community with many needs and lots of energy.

My Project

My students frequently work in groups. We are regularly collecting data and analyzing it. Today, we were building bridges and testing how many pennies they could hold. When one bridge failed, we looked at how it could be improved and engineered another. Lab groups made data tables and drew graphs of their results.

This set of iPads will help my students to generate digital data tables and graphs while working in lab groups.

We will print these and project them when presenting our data to the whole class.

This tool will help my students learn the skills necessary to create digital data. In addition, it will build their confidence in their work and their enthusiasm to share their findings.
