Digital Citizenship Through Literature Connections
Help me give my students a library full of Digital Citizenship books to support them in becoming safe, respectful and responsible digital citizens when dealing with our ever-growing technology driven world issues.
As the Technology Teacher at our Title I school, I get to work with an amazing group of students that range from Kindergarten through 5th grade. The students enjoy using online applications and creating projects using the tools I teach them in class. As I focus my lessons on Digital Citizenship, I would love to incorporate more literature with my students so they can make connections with characters dealing with the same issues our kids have to deal with daily in regards to online safety, preventing cyberbullying, being an upstander, and balancing their screen time.
I am fortunate to work with a school full of curious, self-motivated students who love to learn.
Many of our students come from low socioeconomic households and I would love to give these young digital citizens the resources they need to know what to do when they are faced with uncomfortable situations online.
My Project
Digital citizenship refers to responsible technology usage, and teaching digital citizenship is essential to helping students achieve and understand digital literacy, as well as ensuring cyberbully prevention, online safety, digital responsibility, and digital health & wellness.
Online safety is definitely one of the most essential and influential life lessons we can teach our students.
Kids who are taught to understand and prioritize online safety feel confident to take charge of their digital lives, and are less likely to fall victim to potential threats that await online. I want to teach my students how to protect themselves and their identities by visiting appropriate websites, refraining from posting personal information about themselves and others, trusting their gut, and notifying a trusted adult when things don’t feel right.
I believe it is our responsibility as educators to teach our students to navigate our digital world responsibly, safely and respectfully. Integrating Digital Citizenship into my class lessons is a vital part of this process and will help them develop a healthy relationship with the world around them. I have been looking for ways to better teach this concept to my K-5 students. I believe through literature, our students can relate to the issues the characters face during the story.
All of the resources acquired will be available to our classroom teachers. It is my hope that these resources will become a great way to prompt important conversations that will keep our students safe.
