A student, whose father was in jail, brought a picture of her father to school. Another student ripped it up. When I took a digital photo editing class, I took that photograph with me, so that I could learn with a picture I cared about. I was able to reconstruct and print it for for her.
Helping students see a reason to learn creates motivation, just as it did for me in the story I told.
My students are interested in technology, but they don't see how it can actually be relevant outside of watching movies and interacting with friends on Facebook. Last year, when we piloted teaching Information Literacy and Technology classes, we watched their projects just blossom with accurate information. The projects were exciting, fun to watch, and wonderfully creative. We would like to continue with the focus on creativity by offering them the opportunity to utilize their own photographs in the projects they create.
My Project
Many students have never actually gotten to shoot photographs. Either the equipment is too expensive, or they don't have the tools at home to work with the pictures. We recently purchased photo-editing software, and I can't wait to introduce the students to creating even stronger, more personalized projects using their own photographs. Students will also be able to work on collaboration, since they will be in teams, sharing the cameras.
Students will learn to use technology in relevant ways if they have their hands on it.
Instead of reading about how to do creative, amazing things, they will actually be doing it. Please consider funding this project, as these cameras will be used by six classes per day and over a number of years. This is a wonderful opportunity to support student learning and creativity!
