My students need two computers to research, write, read and explore online. A classroom without computers in today's world is like a car without an engine.

My Students

My students are struggling academically and are trying to catch up to their grade level reading skills. Literacy today is more than reading books. The Internet has expanded what our students are supposed to be able to do. My students cannot even type.

My students have passion and zest.

They care about sports and wildlife conservation. They love fashion and entertainment news, but they also love social justice issues and are learning to value their own opinions and share them with the world. My school is small and dedicated, but we lack the resources to put computers in every classroom for student use. My students have limited access to computer lab time, because they have remedial courses in English and Math.

My Project

If I could bring computers into my classroom, each of my students would maintain their own blog to share their opinions with the world. They would learn the power of publishing. They would post all class writing assignments so they could maintain their own portfolio and track their own progress. They would also learn research skills and typing skills. They are extremely behind in their computer skills and are not going to be college and career ready if they aren't given computer access.

Each of my students shines.

They have their own abilities which cannot be measured by tests. They are good friends, they are excellent chefs, they are fashionistas in the making. They could have bright futures, but they need skills that I don't have the resources to give them. I want to harness the power of their interests and have them publish their own websites, which express their personalities. It will improve not just their digital literacy, but their job skills and future potential.
