Digging in the Dirt: Expanding Our Garden With Enriched Soil

Help me give my students tools to grow our garden space while supporting the pollinators and the ecosystem. The soil in our beds is very dry, full of clay and lacks nutrients needed for the plants to flourish.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. King's classroom raised $522

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our students love nature and want to help the environment. One of the ways we encourage them and allow them to play a part in helping our ecosystem is by planting pollinator gardens each year. We are currently nurturing last year's garden and preparing the soil for this year's garden. As we have been tilling and digging, we have found rebar, cement chunks, clay, and very dry hunks of dirt that are not very plant-friendly. Through this project, we hope to remove some of the current soil and mix in the nutrient-rich soil to provide the best environment for our plants to grow.

Creating garden beds that are filled with nutrient-rich soil/worm castings and supporting our ecosystem through growing our garden is our passion.

Working in the garden also provides our amazing students with the opportunity to move around and self-regulate while gardening. Even the busiest child will slow down and reflect while gardening. This has become such an amazing teaching tool and team-building experience for my students. By supporting this project, you are supporting both the environment and the people who garden the area.
