This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Did your teachers ever present a timeline showing B.C.E. (before common era) & you tried to make heads or tails of it? Recall trying to understand what the concept of ancient meant? I absolutely love the challenge! It seems that my students do too. The DIG THIS workshop will help me in this endeavor.
My 5th graders are sponges when it comes to history.
That is, if I make it come alive. They are a tough group of kids living in New York City. They rarely get opportunities to visit museums with their families and never attend any workshops that are available on weekends and holidays. I try to give them as many opportunities as possible to not only visit museums, but actually have hands-on experience. They really love to go to new places and see what is being offered. Going to a museum that they've never been to, can open up a whole world of ideas that they've never thought they would have before.
My Project
My budding archaeologists will learn about ancient times by participating in an archaeological dig. Then they will examine pottery, metalwork, mosaics, and glassware.
They also will get the opportunity to magnify and sketch objects, piece fragments together and imagine how ancient people used these materials and discover how cultures evolved.
This opportunity to participate in the DIG THIS workshop really will assist me in explaining how many cultures evolved and thrived while others disappeared.
Every year I teach about the ancient cultures in Middle and South America. Giving my kids the background knowledge will fortify them with a greater understanding of these civilizations.
