Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a neighborhood that's predominately Hispanic and 85% of the students who attend the school are from low-income families. While parents try their best to be involved in their student's learning, it can be hard and most of the time students do not get the help they need at home. This is where I step in and try my best to provide everything I can in my classroom for my students.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but the one thing in common they each have is the love for learning.

It has been fascinating to see how much students get comfortable with their Spanish and to hear non-native speaking students engaged in a Spanish conversation. It is truly beautiful to hear!

My Project

Differentiation is key to help students grow and I have seen so much growth since differentiating our Math station during Guided Math, but now it is time to revamp our Word Work area for Daily 5. Being in a dual language, there are even more levels of learning when looking at both language skills of each student. This can make it difficult for students to growth if they all get the same activity that doesn't meet their needs or are overwhelmed with activity choices.

The materials from this project will take differentiation to a new level as students will be able to complete activities that are at their level and some that are challenging enough to take them to a new thinking level.

With the materials from this project, our Word Work area will be organized enough so students can easily grab their individualized box with an activity to help them master a skill taught for the unit.
