Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is designed to support 8 students with autism or other social communication disabilities. With the support of two educational assistants, my fantastic students are working on developing their social communication skills. Emotional control and social skills can limit their ability to participate fully in general education lessons and activities, and students are working hard to learn self-regulation skills.

School can be very overstimulating, demanding, and overwhelming, especially for students with significant disabilities.

My classroom is self-contained, but we try to have each student actively involved in the school community. Participation with their peers is essential to their success, but can only occur when students are in control of their emotions. Luckily, my school is very supportive of inclusion efforts and my students are welcome to join the general education environment as appropriate.

My Project

I am requesting a Teachers Pay Teachers gift card. This will allow me continuously meet to students' needs as we continue our school year online, and I will be able to individualize supplemental materials.

Ultimately, given the uncertainty of the pandemic, I believe I need to remain flexible and responsive in order to promote student success.

We started the year online, moved to a hybrid model, and now are back to online. All these changes can be challenging for my students and their families! This gift card can support learning regardless of setting. If a student requires support in transitioning to our video conferencing, for example, I can find a social story that may support building this skill. When a student needs extra support to learn a concept from our online instruction, I can find additional work so the student can practice a skill. I can retrieve social stories about social distancing and wearing a mask to facilitate a student's return to school. If parents request supplemental materials, I can send items that will best fit the specific situation. This pandemic creates a unique circumstance, and I hope to help my students learn regardless of setting.
