My Project

My students range from Kindergarten to third grade and are all curious and full of energy! They enjoy hands-on activities (this helps with sensory needs). We had started making a sensory wall a couple of years ago, but with the addition of more students, our main goal is turning our entire room into a sensory room.

We have softened the lighting in our room with light covers over the lights and covered our windows with blue paper.

Blues and greens have been proven to have a calming effect, especially for students on the autism spectrum. (This is why we picked blue and green flex seats!)

We feel a light table would be very beneficial to our room as it would encourage students to notice the details on the materials that are presented on the lighted surface. It would also encourage a wide range of skills, including fine motor development, hand-eye coordination, pre-writing skills, and color recognition.

Chewy necklaces and bracelets are essential to our students that are teething and/or needing that "chewing" sensation. Having the calm down corner kit will help me set up a proper calm down corner for my students to use when they are having big emotions (overwhelmed, angry, etc.) or just need a moment to themselves. It will help to act as a tool to help children self-soothe themselves and to mange difficult or disruptive emotions and impulses. The corner will provide a safe space where the student is in control and process their emotions without judgement or repercussions.

By donating to our sensory room project, you'll be be helping my students increase their attention and focus, thus helping them be successful socially, emotionally, and academically in the school environment.
