We like the cat. This is a sentence most of my current kindergarten students can read and write. I know! I am as amazed as you are! I don't know about you but I remember learning how to play with others, my phone number, address, and how to tie my shoes! Boy has Kindergarten changed!
I currently teach 22 eager, inquisitive, kindergarten students who are learning at a remarkable pace.
I am so pleased to be their facilitator on this learning journey. They all come from different backgrounds and experiences with different levels of knowledge and understanding. However, what they all have in common is their shear enjoyment in learning and growing each day. Our school is located in an urban city that is plagued by the typical budget cuts and declining enrollment. These students don't let any of that get in their way and neither do I as we forge ahead to become life long learners together. Kindergarten is more academic than ever and these students are working hard to learn how to read and write. I am truly impressed with their progress and strive to keep finding them materials that grow with their ever growing educational skills.
My Project
The majority of the students in my class consistently know the upper and lower case letters of the alphabet. They are chomping at the bit to write and read. We are currently building on their letter knowledge by teaching them sight words and blending sounds in words. They are doing a great job and I can see how they are more ready than ever to keep building on these skills. Therefore, I want to get these sight word activities for them to practice reading and writing these words and learn even more. They have been practicing with individual letters and sounds, but now I see that they are ready to work with words too. Students like to be independent and use what they are learning. Activities such as these can provide some independent usage that students can really benefit from. We can also use the materials in small teacher led groups or in whole class discussions to help reinforce the words we are learning, introduce new words, and allow for enrichment.
Sight word activities will improve my classroom by helping students use and interact with sight words even more than we do now.
I have learned that repetition is one of the most helpful builders of knowledge. However, it can't be meaningless or boring for students to truly learn. Magnets, stamps, puzzles, electronics, all make learning more fun but also more meaningful. Students will read, say, and learn the words on a much higher level by interacting with them in such ways.
