Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a dual-immersion school which means that all students, regardless of their ethnic background, are working on becoming fully bilingual in English and Spanish.
In our classroom community we have invested a lot of time in developing our reading skills.
We have learned to love books and are constantly reevaluating our classroom library and keeping our reading material fresh and engaging. We recently reorganized and switched our library from fiction to nonfiction to reflect our learning. In the process, we realized that our Spanish section is very small. Students asked for Spanish nonfiction books.
My Project
Students are naturally curious. They love to learn about animals and their world around them. The problem: our classroom library is very scarce when it comes to non-fiction books. In Third Grade, we write informative reports based on student interest, standards, and available resources. My students love to learn about animals and their world. These books will help them stay curious and become experts on engaging subjects of their choice. In addition, the books will serve as models for their own writing. In class, we not only use books as reading material, we study author’s craft and use what we learn to become better writers.
