My Project

Our Art 1 students do a relief printmaking unit each semester in which we carve linoleum blocks. It is time to resupply and get more printmaking handles, brayers and ink spatulas. Fortunately I have lots of #2 and #5 size blades to put in the handles so I don't need to add those to the project. Let me tell you a story.

As I was pulling out the art departments printmaking equipment and tools from the cabinet I wondered if our carving tools had grown legs and walked off.

My students really enjoy heating the linoleum plates with an iron and carving the linoleum blocks with the speedball carving tools. We use brayers to roll the ink on the carved plate and print them. We give extra copies to other teachers in the school, which they proudly display. Our printmaking unit is one of the most popular ones.
