Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Nothing makes an essay or a story look more professional than having correct spelling and grammar. Students could have the most amazing ideas in the world, but if they aren't written in a form than anyone else could understand, they can be ignored.

My students are an incredibly diverse group of eleven- and twelve-year-olds.

They come from a variety of different cultural, socioeconomic, and linguistic backgrounds. They attend an medium-sized public urban middle school. Because of budget cuts and state-wide economic constraints, we are all having to make do with fewer resources and older materials.

My Project

I am requesting thirty student paperback dictionaries for use in my English Language Arts class for sixth graders. Currently in our classroom, we have hundreds of donated novels, but less than five dictionaries. All of the dictionaries are different, which makes class instruction on dictionary usage extremely difficult. With this class set of dictionaries, I will be able to instruct my students in using reference books to proofread their own and each other's writing. We will also be able to study more closely the complexities and the difficulties of the English language.

Despite informally abbreviated "textspeak" and the use of spell check on the computer, all students of the English language would benefit from having a paperback resource that they can refer to when in need of spelling elucidation or information about words.

Without knowledge of the structure and the intricacies of the words in the English language, how will my students ever have the opportunity to express themselves creatively or clearly?
