Device Sanctuary

My students need a safe place to store their phones during instruction time. It would also be nice to offer the incentive of being able to charge them as they are stored.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A literal cultural melting pot, my classroom represents all walks of life, several continents and ability levels. We are a family that helps each other succeed, teaching each other every day as we learn and share ideas. I love to see one of my students grasp a concept in class and then huddle with others to teach them what they have learned. Teaching and reteaching is the best way to show mastery of a concept. Our school motto is "we expect success and nothing less." The classroom reflects as such, because we are future engineers; problem solvers at heart.

My Project

Lately, students are constantly being distracted at school with social media and the fast-paced online environment outside of academic use. They just can't resist checking their Snapchat, Instagram and other apps to see if there's something interesting going on during class time. Instead of being fully engaged in the lesson, they're half-listening or not listening at all, often missing important pieces to their academic puzzle.

Without the distraction of cell phones, students are able to focus on their school work.

They can be fully engaged, gaining all of the information they need to have a successful educational experience. A few of my colleagues have used the strategy of creating a classroom charging station this year and have had great results! Going into the next year, I would like to follow suit and have success in this area.

The materials requested will make a hanging cell phone station with wheels to be stored during class time out of reach in a secured area of the room or classroom closet. Each numbered storage space will be assigned to students for a year of instruction.

The temptation of using devices in school outside of the academic pulse is always going to be a possible classroom management issue. Mitigating it with a safe storage sanctuary and charging station makes it a bit bearable for the hour students are in my class. I get the full attention of students in the classroom and they get a fully charged device for the rest of their day. I am 100% sure that grades and participation in class activities will increase.
