My Students
My classroom is composed of 35 unique, talented, and eager to learn students. Their enthusiasm and desire to learn is highly noticeable throughout all subjects areas. However, the students enrolled in my class come from low income families.
My students do not have all the resources available for them to thrive or meet the new common core standards.
For example, our school is located in Lynwood, California. This city is mainly composed of low income Hispanic families. Most of the families within our school community are Spanish speakers and have English as a second language.
My Project
The math manipulatives that my students and I are requesting are materials that can be used to demonstrate and reinforce fraction concepts. The individual hands-on teaching kit will help students review concepts in small groups, whole class, or independently practice fraction skills on their own.
The manipulatives will be used in my class on a daily basis in order to engage, inspire, and reinforce fraction concepts while incorporating all learning styles.
For example, the fact that the manipulatives requested are color-coded fraction bars that represent wholes through twelfths will help both visual and kinesthetic learners. In addition, students who are auditory and learn by reading and writing will benefit more by using the white erase number line boards. Furthermore, the materials requested will help develop and enhance skills in fractions, comparing fractions, equivalent fractions, parts of a whole, and math fluency.
