Developing Language Through Pretend Play!

My students need toys (e.g. dollhouse, barn) that will be used during pretend play to develop better language skills!

My Students

I work in a low-income special education preschool with children who have autism, language and communication needs, and/or orthopedic impairments.

Communication is the essence of human life.

For someone who has never struggled with communicating their wants and needs, it is hard to imagine how difficult life would be without it. Many of my children have trouble with this, as well as other functional, social, and educational skills. I have the awesome job of working with these kids and working with amazing teachers to support their students' language learning in the classroom. I am a new teacher with limited resources and I am always trying to find new ways for my children to be interested in learning about how to better use their speech and language. My goal is to give my students with autism and orthopedic impairments access to things that every kid their age has access to. The technology, toys, games, and devices available today are amazing and I would like to do my part to help my kids have the opportunity to experience them.

Thank you for reading and thank you for thinking about my kiddos that mean so much to me.

My Project

The company, Melissa and Doug, have a dollhouse, barn, and playground toys that are perfect to encourage my kids to engage in pretend play. The toys are made of wood and are fold-able which means that they will last and, as a speech therapist, it will be easy for me to bring this to my classrooms!

A large variety of language can be elicited through pretend play.

The children are engaged, and also, the vocabulary used is practical. For example, when the child plays with the dollhouse we can pretend to do the dishes and I say give me the "fork"; this vocabulary will hopefully generalize to the child's real life home setting.

Children LOVE to play with these play sets because it doesn't feel like work and we can still get lots of language from a seemingly simple and fun activity.
