Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten students at a high-needs school. Almost half of my students are English Learners. They need extra support so that they can exceed grade level standards by the end of the year.
My students need support in content, but also in developing proficiency in English, so I constantly look for innovative ways to meet their needs.
Their academic and social needs are diverse, so meeting them is a challenge that keeps me learning!
The families, students and I want to make the most out of their kindergarten year!
My Project
Kindergarten students are motivated to learn through play. These STEM kits provide different play experiences which encourage the use of problem-solving skills. As students solve problems together, they will develop language and social skills. For example, while creating a path for marbles on the magnetic board, students will negotiate which materials they will use and who will do which job. This creates an opportunity to resolve conflict and figure out together what will serve their purpose- all through meaningful interaction!
Before STEM experiences, we will hold a brief class meeting to help students vocalize their plan for the day and set intentions for social problem-solving, which gives a daily opportunity for students develop stronger presentation skills.
Providing these highly engaging STEM kits will foster the development of important life skills.
