This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 9th and 10th grade students come from a variety of backgrounds, mostly first-generation college students, foster kids, and English language learners. Almost all of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
Everyone who steps foot in my classroom is expected to think, explore, hypothesize, evaluate information, and think independently while working collaboratively.
My students have yet to fully discover the empowerment that literacy can give them. Every day, they are given the chance to practice and improve their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
My Project
Help my long-term English learners develop effective learning and life habits while exercising their reading and writing muscles. I would love a class set of Sean Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens Workbook as a supplemental book they can read and work on in class and at home. The students in my literacy and language class are trying to reclassify as Fluent English Language Proficient.
Although they are exposed to various types of literature in my class, a self-help book, such as Covey's, would be extremely valuable, relevant, and practical.
This would be a supplemental book, in addition to their regular English language arts textbooks.
