Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a guidance counselor in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of the students at our school have experienced trauma in their lives, have academic and behavioral challenges at school, and receive a free or reduced lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."
The Counseling Center provides a time away from class for them to feel safe, and explore their past experiences as well as dreams for their futures.
From the minute they walk in the door of my Counseling Center I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly impact their experience during the school day.
My Project
Some students have not developed skills to be successful on the playground with a group of 150+ students. Last year, we started Alternative Recess with yoga and board games offered each weekly. We had over 40 (some days as many as 120!) students participate each time that the room was available to them!
This year, we need more things to offer students to keep them engaged and to help them to build cooperation, frustration tolerance, and sportsmanship skills.
I look forward to engaging with students in play with Don't Break the Ice, Battleship, and the magnetic tiles. I know that practice losing in a safe environment will help my students when they experience frustration when they won't have the supports in place.
