This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We have a whole unit in biology that is beyond the microscope -- molecular -- and one of the core science and engineering practices of the Next Generation Science Standards is all about developing and using models of phenomena.

Molecular modeling sets are a great way for students to visualize biochemical processes such as photosynthesis and respiration, and large whiteboards are used frequently by my students for illustrating their thinking and findings during our regular investigations.

These molecular modeling sets will be used by my students as well as fellow biology teachers when we start our unit on matter and energy in ecosystems. Students need to be able to understand how matter is simply rearranged and how matter is conserved; these models do a great job of illustrating that.

The whiteboards will be used for sketching out initial thoughts of how phenomena occur, as well as for Argument-Driven Inquiry sessions where students share their conclusions for peer review before final lab reports. Large whiteboards are ideal for this sharing and collaboration, as they are easy to see during the peer review sessions (as opposed to the smaller 9"x12" boards that are standard for our classrooms). When dry-erase markers in multiple colors are available, these collaborative whiteboard sessions really allow students to be creative in how they show their thinking.
