My Students

Our school is comprised of almost 300 students. My students represent a diverse population from all across the capital city. The school district has a low-income rate of over 60%, as well as a mobility rate of more than 30%. Our children struggle with daily barriers, including poverty, social/emotional demands, special needs, and trauma. We do not receive Title I funding so most of our classroom supplies and resources must come from donations and fundraising.

My students are the most fragile learners in our school building, who require additional supports to help them succeed.

In order to meet their potential, these students with special needs require the regular education curriculum to be adapted and supplemented. My students should not be limited by their disabilities. Instead, they should flourish in their education as their teachers focus on supporting their abilities!

My Project

Desks with wheels will promote both collaboration and independence in my speech classroom. It is important for students to have the ability for flexible seating to serve their needs in different situations. With the need for social distancing, the small horseshoe-shaped table I currently have in my classroom only seats 2 students at 6' apart. This means in a group of 3, one child feels left out having to sit independently at another small table I've borrowed from a classroom. I want my students to be able to push these rolling desks together when we can in order to collaborate, and roll them apart to work independently at times. This will really foster a better learning environment!
