Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Green spaces have been proven to help improve people’s mental health and wellness, improve air quality, and help regulate temperature, as well as help people connect with nature.

Students will choose areas on campus to create green spaces.

They can do this by growing plants from seed, propagating plants, designing moss walls, creating garden beds, and composting. We are requesting raised beds, live plants, and other gardening resources.

The project has three major constraints. Their new green space must benefit the majority or entire school community, must be completed by June 1st, and must cost less than $50.00.

Students will research, write proposals, and create sketches or drawings of the space they would like to convert into a green space. Groups will also collect data to learn how their green space receives sunlight, shade, and water and use this data to choose plants that would thrive in this environment. Students will analyze various soils, create compost, grow plants from seed, propagate plants, and grow moss!

This project gives students a hands-on learning activity so they can learn about plant and soil health, native plants in our area (Maryland), and how pollinators are beneficial for our environment. Students also consider the difference between indoor and outdoor plants and learn how to grow plants from already mature plants which is called propagation. Students learn how plants are used to help regulate temperature in buildings and create naturally pleasing spaces that are beneficial to human health and wellness. Students also learn the benefits of using plants to help cool urban spaces and about agricultural practices that are used to help feed our growing world.
