Designing for a Disability

My Students

My IB Design Technology students love to work on projects. The goal of this two-year course for these Diploma Programme students is to innovate new ideas, make a product, and bring it to market. This involves not just creative thinking and design techniques but also the use of the latest technology to help run projects smoothly. They use everything from math, science, psychology, and many other subjects to bring their products to life. We have lots of projects waiting (and all are STEM-based and/or using sustainable materials). Some big projects are redesigning our student courtyard to be more usable and using 3D technology to make parts for individual projects like making products for students in our school that have a disability so that they could have more comfortable school experiences. We have students who are visually impaired, hearing impaired, and/or are wheelchair-bound. Our Design Tech students will be designing for these students in need.

My Project

My IB Design Tech Students are designing for disability. We have a handful of students in our school who are wheelchair-bound, hearing, or visually impaired. Our Design Tech students will be working with some of them to see if they could make their lives a bit easier and more comfortable and have better school and personal experiences. For prototyping, 3D modeling, and making smaller unique parts, my Design Tech classroom is in need of a 3D printer. This would help them out greatly as each project is unique and my students will come up with assistive technology to help disabled students.
