Designing and Engineering the First Steps for Our Engineers!

My students need will be using these supplies to build scale models of themselves, floors, buildings and bridges.

My Students

Applying science and mathematics as well as the engineering processes, the students will solve real world problems. Students will get an idea of what it takes to identify a problem, design a model, build and test the model. They will then analyze the failure, redesign, build and test.

Most of the students at my school have never had the opportunity to do these types of projects.

The student's families are not well off financially. Many have not been exposed to outside enrichment activities. Many, if they go on to higher levels of education, would most likely be the first in their families to do so. I would like students to experience the higher levels of problem solving that these projects will necessitate. These skills will help them in whatever career they choose. I would like to encourage students to go college and to enter the field of engineering. I feel that by exposing students to examples of engineering on a class room scale, they would be more interested in the field of engineering as a possible career choice.

My Project

1. The students will investigate the idea of scale. They will create a scale model of the classroom and themselves. Students would learn how to transfer real life measurements to scale and how to construct 3-D scale models. 2. The students will investigate support structures. Using 10 pieces of foam board strips, a foot of masking tape and 4 paper clips, the students would construct a scale model of an 8x10x3 floor. We would test the structure by stacking text books unto the structure until it failed. The students would analyze the cause of the failure and redesign the structure. A retest of the new design would be done. 3. The student will assemble a one story, 3-D building. The building materials are straws, masking tape and paper clips. There would be a budget for the building, the students having to buy materials to build their structure. When it is complete, it would have to support a 1 kilogram mass placed on the top. 4. Bridge building with toothpicks-supports 1 kg.

This mini-engineering section would impact the students in a positive way.

1. Allow them to experience the multi-step process that engineers go through when designing any type of project. 2. Get trained to read and follow directions; an important life skill. 3. The use of applied mathematics would help with their math skills. 4. In the design process, the students will have to solve higher order problems to construct their projects and these projects will have multiple solutions to finish.
