My students need a variety of learning materials each customized to their individual learning needs. That's why having the ability to make sturdy materials that can withstand rough handling will help each of them.

My Students
The children I work with are from a diverse background. They come from all over our school district to attend a needs based preschool program or to attend our special needs kindergarten class that insures that every child gets to experience kindergarten, regardless of their disabilities. There are as many variations of Autism Spectrum Disorder as there are children who have it so we work to individualize every child's goal to assist them.
Autism effects all races, income levels, and sexes.
It does not discriminate. We work hard to aid our students in finding the best ways to communicate in the school setting with their teachers and peers. Early intervention is key.
My Project
Language cards are so important to helping my non-verbal students develop communication skills that are necessary to helping them grow and learn. Many of the cards that we have are out of date. Imagine how difficult it is to teach a child today what a telephone is when the picture they're trying to learn it from is of a phone attached to a wall. By having new photos on updated language cards, it will show a more up to date image for items that these children see daily.
The felt story boards also aid in language development.
Often people assume that temper tantrums are the result of poor discipline, but in many cases it's the side effect of not being able to communicate wants and needs appropriately. We use the story boards to build language and to also model social situations so our students can learn how to communicate appropriately.
By having the laminator in the classroom, I will be able to reinforce materials to protect them from the rough little hands of my three, four and five year olds. Materials are constantly getting ripped and broken, so being able to make them last longer is crucial since funding isn't limitless to replace items that are worn or torn. Many of our resources are homemade and we use velcro to match items or even do puzzles so having them last more than one semester is a huge help.
