My students need a 3D printer to create original game designs, product redesigns, architectural drawings, and detailed self-portraits.
and superhero models.
This year my students are creating original game designs, product re-designs, architectural drawings, superhero models, as well as applying the Fibonacci sequence to images. A 3D printer would enhance student images, foster creativity, and provide more visual clarity for them in their projects.
My school is a an Expeditionary Learning community for grades 6-8.
Our hands-on curriculum inspires high achievement through active learning, character growth, and teamwork. We are a diverse community of engaged, motivated learners — students and adults alike. Students take ownership of their learning, guided by creative, passionate adults who navigate the balancing act of challenge and support. The community values independence and individuality, while practicing collaboration, inclusion, and acceptance.
My Project
With a 3D printer students can work at different paces in the classroom; in small group projects, in independent work, and in larger community presentations with high quality projects. The benefits to our school are numerous and inclusive. Since I teach all the students in the school, students with different learning styles will benefit from enhanced spatial relations and visual understanding of 3D forms. Skills such as foreshortening and perspective can be more easily understood. Students will be able to take their sketches of redesigned products and see them come to life in 3D form, allowing for revision, as well as enhanced attention to detail. I also teach a Garment Design Lab and students will be able to create 3D garment designs from their sketches. In addition, a 3D printer will provide opportunities for me to collaborate with the Science, Math, and Technology teachers across three grade levels.
The classroom learning environment will become a "Think Tank Studio" with a can-do attitude that will enhance perception skills and foster more risk taking and innovation.
My students' increased ability to visualize will stimulate growth and the having of wonderful ideas so crucial in developing young adults. I see increased awareness that will create lasting impact in other areas of learning. Finally, students will have a chance to experience the design process as pros in the real world!
