Over the past two years, the students at my school are becoming more exposed to hands-on computer science activities and projects. When participating in these activities my students have shown themselves to be inquisitive creators who are enthusiastic about learning more about how computers, applications, and robots work. The students in my class have diverse needs and academic levels. However, what is truly inspirational about them is that when it comes to computer science activities, they become engaged problem solver ready to debug the next problem.
Breaking the barriers of the digital divide has been a real challenge in my school community.
According to the 2013 US Census, the median income for this neighborhood is 16K. Less than 5% of the students I teach have access to a reliable computer and Internet technology at home. In addition to teaching digital citizenship and computer science courses, we also provide open access time to students in an effort to bridge the gap. Watching students’ view of the world expand as they engage in computer science activities has been a rewarding experience that I hope to continue for many more years to come.
The students in my class are learning about physical computing and exploring the concept of design thinking. As my students begin their journey into basic prototyping, a 3D printer will provide them with a hands-on experience that will bring their creative designs to life.
During this project, my students will be tasked to use their imaginations to plan, design and create a 3D prototype of a futuristic device or innovation.
Student teams will utilize 21st-century skills such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Your support with this project will provide my students with an opportunity to see an idea grow into a tangible product.
