Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a relatively new school specializing in performing arts in a low-income community, engaging students in science is a difficult task. The science program at the school has been evolving to incorporate inquiry and student interest in order to encourage the next generation of young scientists. Although I know that my students have a wide variety of interests, my goal as the 11th and 12th grade physics teacher is to make physics accessible and fun for my students so that when taking science classes in college, they are not intimidated and are greeted with familiarity and confidence that they can succeed in science.
In order to do this, I want to engage my students in the motion and kinematics unit of physics by having them design and build mousetrap cars. Having this experience will not only engage students in physics, but also prepare them for college-level inquiry-based labs in the future. Furthermore, it will encourage critical thinking and problem-solving. This project will also culminate in a written project that will cultivate writing skills and begin them to start thinking about scientific writing before getting to college, so that they will be more prepared when they get there.
In funding this project, you will be making physics more accessible to my students by giving them the tools to think scientifically and critically about a real-life problem. These skills will extend beyond the high school physics classroom. With your help, we can engage a new generation of young scientists!
