I teach 11-16 year old students with a variety of intellectual, physical and sensory disabilities in a moderate-severe functional classroom. My students have a wide range of disabilities and would greatly benefit from the use of flexible seating within the classroom.
Due to the range of disabilities, flexible seating would help my students attend/focus, those with physical impairments could access their work better, help with sensory processing and simply burn off excess energy.
Overall, this would help build a more relaxing classroom full of students ready to learn!
Stability ball chairs will help students who have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyper Disorder), students who are on the Autism spectrum, and students who display other impulsive behaviors to help they stay on task and focused on their work. They will be able to fidget and move with out disrupting others around them. Students can also use the stability ball chairs for leisure or recreation time in the classroom.
The ability to move will give the students the ability to desensitize in a more structured and appropriate manner while in the classroom environment.
Many students struggle with these coping skills in an educational setting.
