My Project

The students at Derby High School are a fantastic group of kids. As a beekeeper with a small apiary of my own, I have found it fascinating and rewarding and would love to share this with my students. We are seeking to establish a beekeeping club that will create a unique and exciting opportunity for various programs at the school. In addition to serving as an extracurricular club, the apiary will serve as a resource for the R.A.I.S.E. Academy, a specialized program serving a population of at-risk students. The club will also augment a variety of academic programs. The study of bees has direct relevance to biology and chemistry. In Mathematics students can experience and observe tessellations and topology of the hive. In Art classes, students can use beeswax in batik and encaustic painting. Once the hives are producing honey, it can be used for culinary purposes and for continued fundraising efforts.
