I teach elementary health & PE to students in kindergarten through sixth grade. We have almost 1200 students in our elementary school building that our department sees weekly.
My students are from a rural community and many do not have access to important hygiene essentials.
Our school is part of a 100% free lunch program and a Title 1 district.
In December, we will be teaching our growth & development lesson to our 5th and 6th grade students. This lesson teaches them about hygiene and puberty as their bodies change. In the past, we have received free samples to give each student a deodorant. Unfortunately, that is not the case this year, so we would like to provide a deodorant for each student.
We also keep a "hygiene closet" for students who need hygiene essentials throughout the year and not just one time. They can let any of their teachers know they are in need of a hygiene item (deodorant, tooth brush, tooth paste, etc.) and we provide them with those items. This project will also help to restock the deodorant in the hygiene closet for the year!
It is difficult to come to school and learn when basic hygiene needs are not met. Giving each student a stick of deodorant will improve self esteem and make our 5th and 6th grade students more comfortable at school!
